Keeping Fresh Flowers Fresh!

By: Graeme Olsen

We all love fresh flowers. But how do you keep them fresher, for longer? Just follow these tips below.

In The Fridge First! The first thing that you need to do when you get fresh flowers is to put them in the fridge for 5 to 6 hours. An arrangement made out of these flowers will stay fresh for three times as long as usual.

Constant Trimming. Remove all flowers and leaves below water level (so it's just stems), and keep your flowers in cold water. Keep trimming them stems every alternate day to keep them fresher longer.

Feed Them. Adding some nutrition to the water (for example, a teaspoon of sugar or an opened vitamin capsule, or a splash of soda pop) will make your fresh flowers last longer.

Maintain Water Purity. Flowers will begin to wilter when the water they are in becomes filled with bacteria. To restrict the growth of bacteria, try adding a copper penny to the water (it acts as a fungicide and keep your flowers fresh), or a crushed tablet of aspirin (to increase the acidity of the water content and reduce bacteria), or add 2 tablespoons of lemon juice (to hamper bacterial and fungal growth).

Cool Temperature. You can greatly increase the lifespan of your flowers by keeping them cool and saving them from microbes.

So there you have it! Follow these tips and your beautiful flowers will last longer.
